It’s easy to say that I love people in love – I mean who doesn’t right?! But you know what I love even more than people in love? People who fight for their love. People who are patient, kind, supportive, encouraging. Who know that there is no better feeling that watching the person they love succeed. Shelby and Jontrell are those kind of people. What started out as a completely silent interaction on a university bus has blossomed into a beautiful four-year relationship. If you ask them what they love most about each other they’ll give you the exact same answer. “They push me to be the best version of myself”. But as Jontrell will tell you,
“The day that I met her was the day that truly changed my life. Now, I won’t say it’s been blue skies and rainbows since that day, but I wouldn’t be who I am today without her impact in my life.”
It’s a pretty awesome thing to be with someone who encourages you to grow and learn and truly wants what’s best for you. You can hear the pride in her voice when Shelby talks about Jontrell’s football stats, even more so when she talks about his accomplishments in creating new programs and his work towards his degree in political science and sociology. Jontrell is never slow to brag about Shelby’s incredible work as a sexual assault therapist and the great things she’s doing to support victims of sexual abuse and encourage self love.
I could honestly talk about these two forever and ever, but I’ll sum it up by saying, find someone who knows your worth and makes sure that you know it too. Find someone who will celebrate with you on the good days and pick you back up on the bad. Because that’s what it’s all about.
